Meet Our People

Carley Ellis, Project Manager, Commercial

When and why did you join EC Harris?

I initially joined EC Harris on a summer placement after my first year at university. I was able to get early exposure to a wide variety of projects, and was so impressed that I applied for a full-time placement five years ago. After that I never really left! EC Harris supported me throughout the remainder of my degree, and after graduating with a First in 2005, I had no second thoughts about coming back.

What’s your typical day like?

I’m working on three projects at the moment, so every day is full of different challenges. Most days I start at around nine and catch up on correspondence before going out on site, which I do at least three times a week. I usually finish at about six, but on Fridays we leave around four and have a quick drink before heading off to start the weekend.

Which are the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

The first project I was involved in was a £100m commercial development. I was based on site for the first time in my career and everything was new to me. Needless to say, my knowledge and experience grew exponentially in those first few months! I find elements of all the projects I work on interesting, but am particularly fond of those that involve big machines and lots of dirt! I’m currently working on a scheme that involves rebuilding sections of the walls on the River Thames, as well as removing contaminated land from each site.

Miles Martin, Team Leader, Property

When and why did you join EC Harris?

I joined EC Harris eight years ago.  Their name seemed to be everywhere at the time and they were winning all the work!  I wanted to be part of that ‘winning team’. Now I’m an Associate and Team Leader for 18 property professionals, including project managers, development managers, quantity surveyors, public sector specialists and regeneration consultants.

What’s your typical day like?

A major appeal of my work is the variety it brings, so there’s no such thing as a typical day! Month-to-month, my activities include team one-to-ones, recruitment and inductions, resource management, financial reviews, sales and bidding, and training and developing my team. All this is on top of my project management duties.

Which are the most interesting projects you have worked on?

Right now my team are involved in all kinds of landmark projects, one of which is a 52-storey residential tower set to be the tallest in Europe. We’re also redeveloping a 27-acre former Terry’s chocolate factory site, which will incorporate hotels, restaurants, leisure facilities and residential and office space, and are building two £25m ‘Academy’ schools.

Vanessa Walker, People Services Manager

What’s your typical day like?

I’m responsible for ensuring that EC Harris UK complies with employee legislation and other regulations, as well as providing HR support to the Group Services Functions. Each day is extremely varied, with activities ranging from developing policies and tools for our HR Managers, to advising on matters relating to Group HR policies or employee relations’ issues. There is the requirement to manage the risk of any potential commercial losses for the business, so it's very important work.

Why should someone join EC Harris?

EC Harris provides great opportunities for career development across the whole business, not just in the core disciplines of project management, building and quantity surveying.  And we’re not all about work. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to network and socialise.  In fact, it’s positively encouraged!

What's the culture like at EC Harris?

The culture at EC Harris is very professional but also incredibly friendly.  Everyone is very supportive and the sociable environment fosters strong working relationships and a great work ethic.
